Background of the Study
Widow inheritance practices have deep cultural roots in many parts of Africa, including Ugheli South Local Government Area, Delta State. These practices, traditionally meant to ensure the economic and social security of widows, often restrict women’s autonomy by imposing marital obligations on them (Oko, 2023). In many instances, inherited widows face limited decision-making power, reduced access to education, and constrained economic opportunities (Egharevba, 2024). Although some argue that such customs offer social protection, contemporary perspectives highlight that they may undermine the rights and independence of widows (Omotola, 2025). The study examines how widow inheritance practices influence women’s autonomy, considering the interplay between cultural traditions, legal frameworks, and individual agency. By critically analyzing both historical and current practices, the research seeks to provide insights into how these customs can be reformed to better promote women’s rights and autonomy (Akinbo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Ugheli South, widow inheritance practices continue to compromise women’s autonomy, restricting their freedom and reinforcing patriarchal control. Despite calls for reform, these cultural practices remain entrenched, limiting widows’ ability to make independent decisions regarding their lives (Omotola, 2024). This has significant socio-economic implications for women, including reduced access to education and economic opportunities. The lack of comprehensive legal and social support exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to address the gap in understanding the negative impacts of widow inheritance on women’s autonomy and to propose culturally sensitive reforms (Oko, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of widow inheritance practices on women’s autonomy.
  2. To identify the socio-cultural factors perpetuating these practices.
  3. To recommend culturally appropriate reforms to enhance women’s rights.

Research Questions

  1. How do widow inheritance practices affect women’s autonomy in Ugheli South?
  2. What cultural factors reinforce these practices?
  3. What reforms can empower widows to exercise greater autonomy?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Widow inheritance practices significantly reduce women’s autonomy.
  2. Cultural traditions are key factors in perpetuating these practices.
  3. Legal and social reforms will enhance widows’ autonomy.

Significance of the Study (70 words)
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of how widow inheritance practices impact women’s autonomy. Its findings will inform culturally sensitive policy reforms that promote women’s rights and empower widows to lead independent lives, contributing to broader social and economic development (Omotola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of widow inheritance practices on women’s autonomy in Ugheli South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Definitions of Terms

  • Widow inheritance practices: Cultural customs where a widow is inherited by a male relative of her deceased husband.
  • Women’s autonomy: The capacity of women to make independent decisions.
